Oratory of the Seat of Wisdom

Many Episcopal Churches throughout the Anglican Communion have Lady Chapels, including S. Clement's in Philadelphia and the famous Church of St. Thomas, Fifth Ave, New York City.  St. Peter's is now one among them. One of the Titles of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is Seat of Wisdom. The Oratory hosts a bronze statue depicting the Sedes Sapientiae and was Dedicated on Christmas Eve of 1999 in Honor of the Incarnation of Our Lord in this Third Millennium. It was commissioned by the rector and crafted by a local artist.

The Oratory also hosts a Memorial Honor Plaque.   It remembers our sainted parishioners and honors present parishioners, including the present rector, The Rev'd Dennis Witt Nichols, and his two predecessors, the Rev'd Gerald Reiss and the Rev'd Edward Cook. Those honored will someday be remembered, but the Plaque salutes a particular point in time, the turning of the millennium and takes no new names, or gets revised.  A new millennium happens every one thousand years. The plaque is a tribute to a half century of ministry.

On the plaque is found a lovely Medallion of Our Lady of the Millennium. It is depicted above.

Our Lord Rescuing the Apostle Peter

The Icon, a gift of the Episcopal Church Women, is in honor of the Patron of the Parish, St. Peter.  Commissioned by the rector, the artist is Suzanne Schleck, who has also painted icons for many churches of the Diocese of New Jersey. This moving icon depicts Our Lord Who Comes to Us in chaos and restores order to His Creation.
