History
St. Peter’s Protestant Episcopal Church was founded on November 9th, 1770 and was incorporated April 28th, 1835. It’s a colonial parish being the last Anglican Church founded in New Jersey before the Revolutionary War, the last of twenty. It was placed on the National Register of Historical Places by the United States Department of Interior on August 11, 1977.
The early history is interesting and reflects the demographic realities of this part of historic King’s Highway. Though founded as a chapel of the Church of England, the early church in Berkeley was home to Anglicans, Methodists and Quakers. It was not until later that a conscious decision was made by the then “managers” to become an Episcopal Parish.
One remarkable feature is St. Peter’s has managed in its long history to boast of only twenty two ministers (vicars & rectors) which attests to its innate stability and ability to adapt to the changing makeup of the Episcopal Church. It continues to be home to All Sorts and Conditions of Persons doing the work of ministry in the County of Gloucester.
Today
We see ourselves as a flagship of religious and civic pride in Clarksboro and the surrounding areas. We are not a musty museum but a thriving Church of the Episcopal Faith in the Diocese of New Jersey. We presently have 300 communicants and are growing with new families.
Statement of Mission
St. Peter’s Church is a worshiping community of Christians responding to God’s call to know Christ, to love Christ, and to serve Christ in our time and in this place.
We are called, collectively and individually, to proclaim by word and example the Good news of God in Christ, seeking and serving Christ in all persons, striving for justice and peace among all people, and respecting the dignity of every human being.
As faithful stewards of God’s bounty, we pledge ourselves to an ever-deepening personal commitment to use our resources rightly in the service of others to His honor and glory and we invite all persons to join us in giving themselves to this ministry of God’s work in our community and His world.
